How to Document Storm Damage for Insurance
Proper documentation is the foundation of any successful insurance claim. The more thorough your records, the harder it is for insurers to dispute your claim.
Start Immediately and Safely
Begin documenting as soon as it is safe to do so. Do not wait for the adjuster -- document before any cleanup. If you must make emergency repairs, photograph first.
Photo and Video Checklist
- Wide-angle exterior shots from all four sides
- Close-ups of every damaged area (roof, siding, windows, doors)
- Interior photos of every room showing water damage, structural issues
- Damaged personal property (appliances, furniture, electronics)
- Video walkthrough narrating what you see
- Photos of emergency tarps or repairs with timestamps
Create a Written Inventory
For damaged belongings, list: item name, approximate age, original cost, and estimated replacement cost. Check old receipts, bank statements, or Amazon order history.
Keep All Receipts
Save receipts for: emergency repairs, temporary housing, storage fees, meals if displaced, and any professional services (public adjuster, inspector).
